Greater Boston Food Bank

Register NOW!

MassDLA has arranged for a volunteer team to work at the Greater Boston Food Bank. Please register today to help with this very worthy cause.

SATURDAY, 3/7/2015 9:30 AM
Shift Duration: 2.5 Hours

70 South Bay Ave
Boston, MA 02118

For directions to your shift please use Google Maps.
Below are some details that should help you prepare for your volunteer shift.

Volunteers enter through our main lobby and will be directed by our receptionist to our waiting area. Our volunteer staff will greet you and get you started on your volunteer project. We have lockers for purses or bags, but GBFB is not responsible for lost or stolen items. If your entire group is running very late or if anyone is lost and needs directions, please call 617-427-5200 to let the volunteer associate know.
All volunteers are trained in food safety at the beginning of the shift.  Volunteers will inspect, sort and pack donated grocery products that are then distributed to hunger relief agencies.  Volunteers work together as a team on an assembly line, and may be working alongside other groups. Some volunteers load boxes onto conveyer belts, other volunteers inspect products, others sort products, and others check and label boxes. A few of these "jobs" require the ability to lift a box of about 30 pounds, but the majority of positions simply require that a volunteer can stand and inspect products for a few hours. Your group project may involve frozen packaged meat sorting; we provide gloves for this project.

All volunteers must be 16 years of age and older regardless of parental permission or attendance.
We have a CLOSED-TOE SHOE POLICY (no sandals or flip flops) as we are a working warehouse. Those wearing open-toed shoes will not be allowed to volunteer.

Volunteers will want to wear comfortable clothes they do not mind getting dirty. You should avoid wearing loose clothing, including: untucked shirts, wide sleeves, wallet chains, bracelets or long necklaces. Long hair should be tied back or contained in a hat.

Please park in our gated lot located diagonally across the street from our building with a GBFB sign on the front.  The gate will lift automatically when you approach the lot entrance.  During the work week, we provide parking but encourage carpooling as the lot can fill up on weekdays, and we cannot guarantee a space.  Please do NOT park in "member agency" spaces.  If the lot is full, we have an alternative lot at the end of the building to which we can direct you as necessary. Weekends have plenty of parking options.

We encourage donations of non-perishable food; donations can be brought in with you on the day of your visit. We can even set up a virtual food drive so that your team can purchase food online and compete against other groups!  Please visit our website to download resources to support your food drive including a list of the best foods to donate. http://gbfb.org/how-to-help/food-drives.php
